Our clients wanted a mix of “grand estate” with “family fun” for the landscape of their Inverness home.
A stately appeal was created with a custom arbor, water fountain, bluestone patios and walkways, Boxwood hedges and brick and stone seat wall.
For family fun, an herb and vegetable garden, butterfly garden, and patio kitchen with custom grill provide outdoor activities. The twins’ grandfather and master carpenter provided inspiration and design for the 300 square foot playhouse. A complete landscape lighting system lengthens the hours of outdoor enjoyment and accents the custom landscape.
Multi-season interest begins in spring as 10,000 bulbs, blooming redbuds, lilacs and viburnum explode in color and fragrance. A powerful summer impact was created by planting over six thousand annuals, along with hundreds of perennials and Endless Summer Hydrangea in 30 planting beds and a shrub rose garden in various shades of pink. Hardy mums, Autumn Blaze Maples, and burning bush complete the fall palette. Each year, annuals are planted with new color themes.
One difficult aspect of the installation was recreating the property without sacrificing the mature trees located near the 2,000 square foot bluestone patio and the 160 foot mortared seat wall, which required a 48” footing. The wall foundation was hand dug with sleeves covering all major roots running through the foundation and treated rebar was used to reinforce the wall where roots penetrated below soil grade. The patio base of porous sand gravel mix allows penetration of oxygen and water without suffocation of the root systems. A custom hand-dug drainage system for the house and patio was installed to prevent flooding and water damage to existing trees.
The end result exceeded the expectations. The twins have become avid gardeners and the landscape has extended the family living and entertaining space. This plain backyard has truly been transformed into a backyard family paradise.
